Ube Industries complies with the chemical-related laws and regulations of countries worldwide, including Japan. We ensure rigorous chemical product management throughout distribution systems and proactively disclose safety information about our chemical products. Across these efforts, chemical substance management at Ube Industries takes into account health, safety, and the environment.
The departments with responsibility for product safety at each internal company are in charge of chemical substance management, and the Quality Management Department at Ube Industries is the corporate unit with overall control.
Complying with Chemical Substances Laws and Regulations
Ube Industries is proactively digitizing systems to handle chemical substances laws and regulations. The Company has also constructed a global compliance structure that includes a safety data sheet (SDS)*1 production support system and U-CHIRP, an originally developed, comprehensive in-house database for managing chemical safety and regulatory information about chemical substances. Using these systems, we aim to eliminate manual tasks and dependence on the work of individuals in legal compliance as much as possible.
Ube Industries is also managing contained harmful substances in the raw materials it supplies, responding proactively to the demand for green procurement,*2 which is especially strong in the electric and electronic device and automotive industries.
Stepping Up Chemicals Management
Ube Industries supplies local-language versions of SDSs and product labels for all products, complying with regulations in Europe, the United States, and around Asia to ensure the safe use of chemical products throughout the supply chain. The Company also maintains websites for key product SDSs. We actively provide safety information on chemicals for R&D use in efforts to ensure a safe research and development environment in universities and research institutions.
The Company’s sales and technical personnel access hazardous substances information on products through the SDS database to obtain the handling and disposal information that they need to convey to customers.
Extensively Disclosing Safety Information
For some time, Ube Industries has endorsed both Japanese and international chemical product safety inspection programs, including those of the International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA), and has actively gathered and disseminated safety information on its chemical products. Since fiscal 2011, the Company has participated in the voluntary chemical substance risk management activities of the Japan Chemical Industry Association (JCIA) while gathering and disseminating hazard information*3 and risk assessments.
Ube Industries also enthusiastically supports the ICCA’s voluntary Long-Range Research Initiative, which focuses on the effects of chemical substances on human health and the environment. The Company provides support for the development of new risk-evaluation techniques and research into the safety of chemical substances for children and the elderly that is being conducted by universities and other research institutions.
To ensure the safe transport of chemical substances, the UBE Group provides transport companies and drivers with safety information to use in case of an accident during transport. This is only part of the Group’s commitment to preventing logistics accidents and enhancing logistics quality.
